The Drive for the Stars

To Gisela Giardino, for her time and attention.
It is seemingly impossible to summarize Mankind in a few strophes. I’m a fool. I tried.

Like any bio-organism, He tries to survive,
Working for a purpose difficult to realize
When He merely looks around.

For someone forgot to tell Him of planets
That will die. Of cosmos, of crashing comets
Off course, of course, unbound.

And daily lost We find Our tiny bio-creature
Acting a strange part on stages of theatre;
A tragedy, known and renowned.

In faith He looks for inner strength and comfort
While politics, sports or simple arts of any sort
Entertain Him and can confound.

In truth, as any bio-beast, He might well fare
If He finds the fuel to escape; a jump to where
Oxygen and water also abound.

For He is father of Our own gods since the dawn
Of pious times, and His ship, akin to primal spawn,
Will gravitate or run aground.
