The cooling breeze of a Lisbon's night in May

I, the cooling breeze of a Lisbon's night in May, am witness to a man roaming the streets with a dog. It's a Saturday night, and being no exception that man was fully drunk. Half-drunk with tiredness, with happiness half-drunk. Such was the state in which that drunken man could be found.

Men with dogs are supposed to be on the hunt. Yet those two seemed to be wandering aimlessly, as if they were lost. The dog lost in the worlds of scent, the man in those of thought.

Perturbing my own breezy sound, out of that man's device Röyksopp's A Higher Place started to play by chance. He seemed to be in a higher place, and so the sounds were not inadequate. And only by such a perfect momentary blending of thought and sound, I didn't mind being neglected. Men may forget about me for a while, but I'm bound to return and cool them down.

What shook my existence was when that man, a mere sac of flesh and bones, turned into a bagpipe and released into the night a name, but as if that name was attached to the guts from where it came. I tell you, after all these ages of gliding through the night, it still impresses me when these mortals to higher grounds aspire, and use names as hooks to keep them well anchored or to keep on climbing up. And you know, dear mate, dear Fate, that mortals can only die.

E pela manhã fez-se-me luz.

While you're out

Overture

Evening, you bring back everything the bright dawn scattered:

bring back the ewe, bring back the kid, bring back the child back to its mother.

                                                                                                                                                         Sappho

Movement

While you're out, lovers should be

forbidden of public amorous display,

pigeons of coo roo-c’too-coo denied,

rain prevented from falling too softly,

warm wind cooled away.

Counter-movement

By a stroke of luck no one will obey

my dictate and the world will proceed

whether I'm in love, or whether it rains,

whether some whisper Amen, or pray,

so I sigh about a Helen a day.

Captain Ahab still alive in the 21st Century, news report.

Last Tuesday a fishing boat sank off the Portuguese coast. That boat had been baptized Virgin of Sameiro, once again proving that Faith has no effect over Buoyancy.

Yesterday the whole crew of six fishermen was spotted and rescued. Apart from hypothermia they were found in very good shape.

The fishing boat had set to sea from a small fishing village that is more used to mourn for those who were lost at sea than to rejoice for their deliverance.

Now guess who's being praised for that rescue? You guessed right: Our Lady of Fátima, God, a deceased mother turned into a guardian angel, and the like. A miracle, they say, and no news reporter elucidates them otherwise.

So here I leave a list of true deities that should be thanked for if the fishermen and news reporters ever recover from their deluded state:

- All humans involved in the development of the helicopter and all its gear
- All humans who spent their brain-power developing and improving life-rafts
- All humans whose collection of studies made possible the existence of survival food pills
- All humans who fought for a society that provides services to its members
- All humans who I forgot to mention here but had a part in the deliverance

Notice that none of the inventions. none of the engineering contraptions. none of the political advances above are claimed to have been thought of by divine inspiration. None of those humans involved is considered to be a saint.

If Ichthys, a fish symbol, represents Christians, then human ingenuity's one should be that of a school of whales, or a Godzilla when ill-applied. Nevertheless do not forget that the real monster is the whale-obsessed person. Captain Ahab, for one, couldn't look beyond his own Dick. Moby-Dick.

If this isn't a life we're leaving

Forget Europe. Let them be
with their cartoonish King Sarkozy,
with their Matryoshka doll, the Empress
Merkel, small and smaller Merkels till emptiness.

Let's make use of our diplomacy
and convince the Commonwealth of Nations
we can be a part of it too, with urgency.

If we play our cards right, we have to offer
the restoration of England's sense of Empire,
improved relationships with many regions:
Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau,
Mozambique, East Timor and Macao,
São Tomé and Príncipe and yet still
other names they can't even pronounce,
not forgetting the largest of those, Brazil.

With them there'll be good deals on oil,
rich earths the Chinese now exploit,
so badly needed for high-technology.
There'll be as well cheap labour,
not to mention cheap labour.
Don't forget the wine. Cheap. Lovely.

Remind Britain of the Anglo-Portuguese Treaty.
which has been fairly renewed since 1373.
The last time it was cited was in 1982,
during the Falklands, err Malvinas War.
It can be evoked once more by us too.

If language is held forth as a problem,
think of me and read my words to them:
'A linguistic issue? What are you aiming at?
I speak better English than your local twat.'

Recite their poet Winston Churchill if needed be,
when the Azores became of importance militarily
to set a base to fight the rising U-Boat threat:

'I have an announcement', I said, 'to make to the House
arising out the treaty signed between this country and Portugal
in the year 1373 between His Majesty King Edward III and King Ferdinand
and Queen Eleanor of Portugal.' I spoke in a level voice,
and made a pause to allow the House to take in the date,
1373. As this soaked in there was something like a gasp.
I do not suppose any such continuity
of relations between two Powers
has ever been, or will ever be,
set forth in the ordinary day-to-day
work of British diplomacy.

Quote even the love poem such treaty is:

"In the first place we settle and covenant
that there shall be from this day forward... true,
faithfulconstant, mutual and perpetual friendships,
unions, alliances, and needs of sincere affection,
and that as true and faithful friends we shall
henceforth, reciprocally,
be friends to friends
and enemies to enemies,
and shall assist, maintain, and uphold
each other mutually,
by sea and by land, against all men
that may live and die."

Help! Europe's evicting us by and by!

A few passing words on literature

His profile is writing slower than the tram goes.
A professional notebook, a respectful pen.
He writes and stops now and then.
He gazes out of the damp tram window.
But I swear he's seeing nothing but his past.
Actions, talks; he writes of people, of now or gone.
I can't read from here, but I so sense.
Outside, rain and grey fall and pass by fast.
I think he's writing away his solitude.
So lonely, he must be a writer.
He's experiencing a milky white blindness.
White's his focus; his rapture white.
I try to read, but what did he write?
Die, das, der? He's Swiss, Austrian, German.
It does not matter, he's but a writing man.
He reaches for one book, the tram is crowded.
I interrupt him to tell I'll write of him writing.
He smiles back and he's Wolfgang.
He just married a Portuguese woman.
His comparative literature thesis' on Saramago.
My contacts, take them, I've got to go.
Write me soon and you'll make a new friend.
That was literature, and life's the end.

A criança portuguesa é excessivamente viva, inteligente e imaginativa.

The Smoker's Complaint

for Anna Pashen

My addiction is adored by my brain
which finds reward in my pose,
in a good nicotine dose,
in spite of my lungs and their stain.

Let me be an experimental ground
where Caffe and Nico can be found
making teen love after a meal.
What evils this evil can heal!

And before aiming your next protest
here at my poetic smoking
remember that oil or coal burning
should rank higher in your manifest.

[The truth is I am yet quite unsure
if I smoke to put an end to me
or to do away with passive thee.
Ah, this indecision is my sole allure.]

Nada recomposto do que me tinha trazido o mês, novo aumento.
Passou Junho, passou Julho, chega Agosto e dispara o juro.
